BBN catch up with Scottish featherweight talent Stephen Tiffney ahead of his debut at Edinburgh's number one boxing setting – Meadowbank Stadium on September 5th.
The last time the venue was used for a boxing event was back in April 2012 when Alex Arthur staged his self-promoted, ‘Homecoming’ event for the return of Craig McEwan, and it also famously played host to that epic encounter between Alex Arthur and Michael Gomez which Frank Warren called, “The greatest contest seen on these shores since Nigel Benn beat Gerald McClellan in 1995.”
The 27-year-old Edinburgh boxer appears on the show alongside Stephen 'Monster' Simmons in the main event with David Brophy providing chief support.
What made you want to start boxing? “I was always into sport when I was young. Played football done judo and eventually tried boxing.”
Who was your boxing hero growing up and why? “I’ve always been a fan of Sugar Ray Leonard because he is such a great all round boxer.”
How old were you when you had your first fight and how did you do? “I had my first fight when I was 11-years-old and lost.”
How well did you do in the amateurs? “I went on to win the Scottish championships four times as a junior and once as a senior. I represented Scotland in lots of international tournaments.”
What made you decide to turn pro? “I've boxed for almost 16 years now so feel the time is right to turn pro where my style is more suited.”
What team do you have around you? “I'm signed with MGM Scotland in connection with MGM Marbella who are a great team and I believe are only going to get bigger and better.”
What sort of fighting style do you have? “I would class my style as an inside, thinking fighter.”
What ambitions do you have for your pro career? “I hope to go far and believe if I work hard then I can. I would love to win a British title and possibly even more.”
When is your first fight and who will be there in support? “My debut is on the 5th of September in Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh. All my family and friends will be there supporting me along with my club mates from Lochend gym who are also on the bill.”
Tell us something that not many people know about you? “Most people think I have ginger hair when in fact it is actually strawberry blonde…”
