'Beefy' wants a WBO world title shot for Christmas
Liam Smith has revealed what is on his Christmas list – a future fight with new WBO super-welterweight champion Patrick Teixeira.
Former world champion Smith (28-2-1, 16 KOs) returns on Friday as he faces Roberto Garcia (42-4, 25 KOs) at the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona, live on Sky Sports and DAZN.
‘Beefy’ is keen to secure big fights in 2020, and he has named Brazilian southpaw Teixeira (31-1, 22 KOs) as the opponent he is most interested in fighting next year.
Smith said:“I’m glad to be back fighting again in America. I’m happy we got an opponent in Roberto Garcia who will come to win. He will be fit and ready but I’m in very good shape and had a very good camp.
“It will be a good competitive fight but I’ll come through with flying colours and get back in the mix for big titles at 154 or 160. We have a new champion at 154 in Patrick Teixeira, and we’ve both just fought the same opponent last time out, so that’s a fight I’d want down the line.
“First and foremost I have got the fight on Friday, so I’m looking forward to putting a show on as it’s a top card with top fighters, prospects and world champions, so I’m excited for the whole show.”
It’s already been an impressive 2019 for Smith, following stoppage wins over Sam Eggington and Mario Alberto Lozano earlier this year.
