In a show titled “Thunder and Lightning”, there was a lot stormy weather for promoter Joe Elfidh to get through as he faced many last-minute withdrawals.
Instead of seeing the return of Rod Smith to the ring and popular local lad Darren Snow, there was just a quintet of four-rounders at the North Notts Arena on September 17th instead.
The show must go on, the saying goes, and it did, but there was further despair when one of the home fighters dropped a decision.
The opening bout saw Lincoln’s Jordan McLoughlin (2-1), 26-years-old, lose on points to the more experienced and heavier opponent, Nathan Hardy (6-15-2) from Sheffield.
Hardy came in at the 11th-hour as a replacement for Liam Wright and edged the Lincoln welterweight by just a single point, scored at 39-38 for the away corner by referee Kevin Parker.
McLoughlin became the fourth fighter to have his unbeaten record ruined by Hardy.
Armthorpe’s Kyle Fox (3-0) proved to be too much of a handful for Rudolf Durica (1-12), who had a point deducted for holding before the first round was even over.
The 23-year-old former Yorkshire amateur boxing champion extending his winning run to three in three, taking the decision comfortably at 40-35.
Yemeni-born Hassan Ahmad (7-0) had no trouble in finding his seventh paid victory as he debuted under the JE Promotions banner in his first fight back after a three-year hiatus.
“The Hurricane” displayed good movement and savvy ring craft despite the long layoff, as well as a good shot selection, a lot of it coming off the back foot as he cruised to a comfortable shut-out points win over Margate’s Ricky Leach (3-20-1), who was on the receiving end for most of the 12-minutes.
The unbeaten 24-year-old from Darnall, trained by Chris Smedley and Steve Barnes at Lower Manor Boxing Club, had not fought since 2014 due to contract issues with former manager Dennis Hobson but should be pleased with his performance and looking forward to the future.
Dan Cooper (6-0-1) looked strong against Jiri Svacina (12-26), who managed to hear the final bell despite looking set for an early finish.
The 21-year-old cruiserweight, now a part on Ingle’s famous Wincobank gym, didn’t drop a round in his seventh pro fight.
Nottingham’s Omari Grant (2-0) started lively and went on to outpoint Barry’s game JD Jones (0-2) to double his win tally.
It was an entertaining bout that was actually closer than the 40-36 result suggests. ‘Joey Two Guns’ deserves as much credit from the away corner as the victor.
Despite the early misfortunes encountered, it was a decent Sunday service delivered by JE Promotions in the end.
